The facilities of Camp Tecumseh are suited for nearly all sports. Our staff includes esteemed coaches and college athletes. Each camper learns the basics of a wide range of sports as well as receiving specialized instruction in the sport they enjoy most.
BASEBALL
The Tecumseh baseball program features two baseball fields. The Senior Diamond is a full sized regulation baseball field for the older campers and the all-camp team. The Junior Diamond is scaled down to Little League specifications for the younger campers.
Tecumseh also has a carefully supervised baseball batting cage where players can regularly practice their batting technique. The pitching machine can be programmed to pitch at various speeds to suit the level of the batter. The machine can also be programmed to pitch curve balls.
Each year, the Tecumseh baseball staff includes college or high school baseball coaches as well as current college or high school players.
Both fields are in regular use. Many in-camp games are played and games against other camps are scheduled each year.
BASKETBALL
Tecumseh’s basketball program has two regulation outdoor, lighted courts plus three indoor courts in newly constructed Munger Hall. Every child is included in the spirited intramural basketball evening league program: Senior, Junior and Rookie and all learn the game!
The basketball program was founded years ago by legendary Episcopal Academy coach, Dan Dougherty, continued by his son, Mike Dougherty, and now is headed up by Co-Head of Staff and Lower Merion High School coach, Blake Stabert and his staff of high school and collegiate players.
FOOTBALL
The Tecumseh Football program, started by legendary, Hall of Fame Coach and former Director, George Munger, continues to flourish today under the guidance of Tecumseh icon, Jim Fraser. Jim has been at Tecumseh since 1948 and played ten years in the NFL!
His staff, headed by pre-season All-American, Matt McMurdo, teaches the fundamental skills of the game through a combination of non- contact fun drills and flag football games. Each summer there are numerous intramural Blue Gray contests as well as several flag football games with neighboring camps.
LACROSSE
Lacrosse is one of Tecumseh’s most popular sports. Played on full-sized Stanley Field, Tecumseh boasts a lacrosse program filled with alumni who have played at the collegiate and professional level! The Honor Roll of names is too numerous to mention, but each summer several alums come back to help the present staff instruct campers on all levels from novice to expert.
The present staff is headed up by Lower Merion High School varsity coach, Mike Borsch, who is joined by collegiate players: Joe Bucci – Georgetown, Deane Mellor – McDaniel, Sellers Garrett – Hamilton, Jim Lamb – Franklin and Marshall and Geoff Geppert – Haverford College.
Guest clinicians the past two years are Tecumseh alums: Eric Gregg, St. Joe Prep varsity coach, Brian Dougherty, Chestnut Hill College men’s varsity coach and former National Team goalkeeper, Bo Redpath, Bryant College, and Bill Daye, former Boston Cannons coach.
Tecumseh plays lots of intramural Blue Gray games, plus several competitions with other camps including tournaments in Maine!
SOCCER
Played on newly refurbished Grant Field complete with new sod and underground irrigation, the soccer program flourishes at Tecumseh under the guidance of former Gettyburg captain and lifetime camper/counselor, Drew Erickson.
From novice to advanced, players are taught the skills and tactics of soccer. Tecumseh soccermen test their mettle in intramural Blue Gray competitions plus many tournaments and games outside of camp at every age level.
The staff is comprised each summer of present and former high school and collegiate players. Recent visiting clinicians have included internationally renowned North Carolina coach, Anson Dorrance; Tecumseh’s own Biff Sturla, Harriton High School varsity coach; British coach, Tony Williams and former Wesleyan Captain, Woody Redpath.
TRACK & FIELD
Paul Poiesz, renowned Philadelphia Coach and Official, heads up a staff that teaches the basics of: sprints, hurdles, high jump, long jump and high jump. Extra instruction is available for both campers and counselors in “core training” for those who want the latest in conditioning and strength work.
Weaver Track includes an artificial surface for sprints and field events and serves as the venue for the annual Jim Gibbons Track Meet in honor of our former Tecumseh Track Head and hosts several camps from NH and ME in this prestigious one day meet.
TENNIS
With eight beautiful red clay courts, tennis may be Tecumseh’s most popular program. Our courts are filled from morning to nightfall. Aided by Varsity NH coach, Ron Sundquist, and one of Tecumseh’s all-time best players, Wes Ballentine, the staff makes learning this lifetime sport most enjoyable. Players participate in a season-long challenge ladder and opportunities to participate in tournaments in New England abound.
VOLLEYBALL
The lifetime sport of volleyball, under the expert guidance of Mike Christy, renowned New Hampshire high school coach, (who also doubles as our expert woodshop program instructor) has two venues at Tecumseh. The most popular is on the beach at our fabulous waterfront and the other is in newly constructed Munger Hall. The two courts inside Munger Hall are Olympic quality and provide the opportunity to play come rain or shine.
Young campers are taught the basics through the game of newcombe and advanced players have intramural and outside our camp competitions.
GOLF
The Golf program, with the addition of our own new 1500 sq. ft. Supplee chipping/putting green, provides the opportunity for boys of all ages and ability to learn and practice this lifetime sport. Weekly trips to local courses, including the beautiful Bald Peak Colony Club, supplement this thriving program.
WRESTLING
Tecumseh wrestlers are taught the basics of the sport by the wrestling staff and are also guided in proper off-season training. Many Camp Tecumseh wrestlers have gone on to star in wrestling at the high school and college levels.
The Tecumseh wrestling program is run by Taylor Perkins. Taylor’s energy and enthusiasm for the sport are infectious among the campers. “Fight Night” has been a main attraction for Saturday night activities. Beginners compete in a best 2 out of 3 “take downs” while more experienced wrestlers compete in full matches.
The sports popularity has boomed in the past few years at camp, and in 2016 we purchased a brand new, “CT”, wrestling mat. Camp Tecumseh will be visited in 2017 by Bucknell’s Head Wrestling Coach, Dan Wirnsberger.
WEIGHT TRAINING
With the tremendous emphasis on sports at Tecumseh, many of the campers and counsellors are constantly training for their upcoming scholastic sports teams, whether it be football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball, lacrosse or whatever.
To help each athlete reach his athletic potential, Tecumesh offers a well equipped and well supervised weight training center. The Weight Room is equipped with benches (both flat and inclined), leg presses, lat machines, dumbells, a squat rack, weight lifting belts and other equipment.
Proper weight training is taught to all interested campers. This training includes how to use the equipment and how to design a proper weight training program, as well as all the necessary safety issues involved in this type of activity.
For safety reasons, junior campers are not allowed in the weight room unless under the supervision of a counselor. Older campers and counselors may use the weight room facilities at any time, with proper supervision.
ROCK CLIMBING
A recent edition of a climbing wall in the barn has added rock climbing as a favorite activity. Mountain trips also include rock climbing excursions.
HOCKEY – OFF-ICE TRAINING
In the summer of 2000, Tecumseh added a street hockey rink which has proven to be very popular. Tecumseh has a full line of street hockey equipment and offers instruction and games to all age groups. Tecumseh carries a full set of helmets with face masks to prevent any head or eye injuries.
ARCHERY
Long time counselor Barb Dougherty leads the archery program. Barb is certified by the New England School of Archery and has been at Tecumseh for many summers.
RIFLERY
The rifle program is under the guidance of Will Powers, owner and operator of Powers Firearms Instruction. Will has vast experience in rifle instruction and is NRA certified.
FENCING
This ancient sport was brought to Camp Tecumseh years ago by Lajos Csizar, the U.S. National and U. of Pennsylvania coach. “Maestro’s” tradition continues today with his successors, many of whom competed internationally!
Cathy McLellan, inducted into the US Fencing Hall of Fame, continues “Maestro’s” unique fencing program.
